Raising awareness through status updates

So I'm not really sure what came over me. Just that I have been angry about the truth of what my daughters will have to face. I KNOW they will be sexually harassed at some point in their lives, I know there is a good chance they will be sexually molested or inappropriately touched. That they will be pressured into doing things they don't want to, that they will be inundated with images of half naked, dis-embodied women in advertising. This makes me so angry I want to turn into a bear, stand in front of my 3 amazing daughters and growl at the whole damn world. To scream "stay the FUCK away from them, they are innocent, they are perfect, they do NOT need this at all!!" I can't though. The only thing I can do is to raise them to love themselves, to respect themselves, and not to take shit from anyone. It breaks my heart that I can't protect them. It breaks my heart that someone might do to them what has been done to me. So that is where I have been, never knowing which step to take after these thoughts.

Then the secret status updates for women only came along. I played the bra game, it was amusing. I didn't realize it made the news as I haven't watched the news in a very long time. Then came the purse game here is the message that went out

Ok ladies here's another game, it's like the bra color game which was a total success and we had men wondering for days what was with the Colors and it made it to the News. Well this game has to do with your handbag, Where we put our handbag the moment we get home for example "I like it on the couch" , "I like it on the kitchen counter" , "I like it on the dresser" well u get the idea. Just put your answer as your status with nothing more than that and cut n paste this message and forward to all your FB female friends to their inbox. The bra game made it to the news. I began to think, okay if we have this power why are we wasting it on stupid unimportant games, let's do something to make a difference, band together and make our voices heard, be a catalyst for change! and so I typed up a message and sent it to every woman in my facebook friends list. I don't know if it will make a difference, if it will make it to the news, but at least I am attempting to change something! Here's my message.

Women made it to the news with the bra color and now we are talking about where we hang our purses. If we are trying to prove we have power why don't we use it to bring to light an issue that needs to be talked about instead of silly games?

I have 3 daughters and one of the saddest things I know is my daughters will be sexually harassed. They are likely to be sexually molested, they will hear inappropriate comments, they will be cat-called and whistled at as they walk down the street. They will be inundated with images of half naked, dis-embodied women in advertising. This makes me angry! So let's make people think!! Let's bring this issue to light. In your status post how many different men have sexually harassed you or sexually molested you. You don't even have to include how many people have yelled out a window at you, I don't know how many men have done that, I can't even begin to count that. So just post that number. Then send this to all the women you know on facebook. Let's see if THIS can make it to the news, see if we can begin to make a change in the world for the betterment of our daughters, nieces, grand daughters, sisters, friends, wives.
